Geography lesson for today … Greenland IS in North America.

A continent is a large contiguous chunk of land. Depending on where you are taught (in the world) you will have learned that there are between 4 and 7 continents.

In most of these models Greenland is part of the North American continent (islands get grouped together with the nearby continents as if they just broke off yesterday). I think depending on which model you use Greenland may be part of a different grouping.

Please also note that due to map distortion (projecting a 3-d sphere onto a 2-d flat surface) greenland is shown as disproportionately large… compare it to countries near the equator and check the land-size. The smaller size (about a quarter the size of australia) may be part of why it is generally overlooked. A little bigger and it might be it’s own continent

I hope for their sakes, that it doesn’t transform into a North American Union as it did here in Europe.

Someone pointed out above me that the North American economies are too diverse for a NAU, but take note that 17 countries in Europe all share a single economy ; the Euro, from the world’s fourth largest economy Germany to Estonia and Poland. The USA will just have to support the Canadian and Mexican economies heavily.

Depends if you mean North America as the place where Canada, USA and Mexico are, or if you are one of the silly deluded people who consider North America to be a continent of its own, nobody in their right mind does though.

as far as i know, North America, Central America, and South America are one continent. its just that the US became so powerful that i guess people started refering to the US as american in the sense that it encompassed the whole continent.

During the Colonial era the British people typically referred to us as “American colonists.” After we won the war of Independence the name of our new country became “The United States of America”, and for want of a shorter description, the British people referred to us simply as “Americans”.

“The people of the United States” is more correct, but it is long and awkward.

“U.S. citizens” is used sometimes used. Sometimes encyclopedias refer to various “American” individuals by their profession with the word U.S. in front of it, as in “U.S. author” or “U.S. President”, or “U.S. educator”.

Fortunately for our neighbor to the north, and our many neighbors to the south, each of them has been given a name that readily lends itself to identifying its peoples’ nationality. “Canada” gives “Canadian”; “Honduras” gives “Honduran”; “Uruguay” gives “Uruguayan”, etc.

No such luck for those of us from the U.S.A.!

So, we’re more or less stuck with the generic “American”.

But, technically, I suppose, anyone living on either American continent – North or South – would be “an American”.

Not sure exactly how many countries are in North and South America, but what do you mean about the names?

North = Canada, USA, Mexico

South = Brazil, Lima, Chile, Venzuela, and a lot of others.

Well, there are 23 countries in North America and 12 countries in South America (Officially). However, un-officially, there are 3 countries in North America (Canada, US & Mexico) and the other 32 countries are in South America.
